MPH Program Overview

The MPH program provided by Stony Brook University is one of less than one hundred programs nationwide that is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. The goal of the program is to give graduates the skills they need to design, implement, and analyze public health programs and policies in order to enhance the population’s well-being overall. There are numerous areas that this program can factor into including environmental health, women’s health, community health, and more. The program is a campus-based one and offered three different concentration areas for students to select from.

MPH Curriculum and Courses

The MPH program combines a practicum and a capstone seminar with a series of core classes to help build up the overall understanding of the program. Examples of the core curriculum include:

• Data Management and Informatics
• Epidemiology for Public Health
• Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health
• Biostatistics
• Introduction to the Research Process
• Environmental and Occupational Health

In addition to the core classes, students can select from three concentrations and will earn fifteen credits based on the specializations there. The concentrations include:

• Evaluative Sciences
• Community Health
• Public Health Practice

MPH Admissions

Only around twenty five students are admitted into the program each year, and students must possess:

• Bachelors or higher degree
• GPA of 3.0
• GRE Scores unless a Doctoral degree is possessed.
• All official transcripts
• Three professional letters of recommendation
• Two Essays

Additionally, a personal interview may be requested prior to admission.

MPH Tuition and Financial Aid

There are numerous financial aid options available for those applying for the MPH program. The UUP Tuition Assistance Program provides tuition for one course each semester, for example, and numerous loans, grants, scholarships, and other programs exist as well. Tuition rates for full time students are around 5,292 dollars for in state students and nearly double that for out of state students.
