MPH Program Overview

The program offered by Florida A&M University for a MPH focuses on a wide range of different public health concerns ranging from AIDS to heart disease, environmental health risks to oral health education. It has several goals including the encouragement of disease prevention through community programs, the conducting of research to improve health for those in need, to advance knowledge of high risk behaviors and much more. In short, it focuses on giving students all the skills they need to help assess and manage the numerous health related issues facing the public today. The program is campus bases and requires an internship, completion of community service, and classwork.

MPH Curriculum and Courses

As mentioned above there are five main areas of study in the MPH program:

• Biostatistics
• Environmental and Occupational Health
• Health Policy and Management
• Epidemiology
• Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Students will also have to pass a written exam, fulfill an internship, complete one hundred hours of voluntary community service, and gain field experience. The Internship counts for six semester hours. Some of the classes that make up this program include the following:

• Public Health Practice
• Introduction to Epidemiology
• Principles of Health Policy and Management
• Biostatistics for Public Health Practice
• Chronic Disease Epidemiology
• Economic Aspects of Health Care
• Contemporary Urban Health

MPH Admissions

Students must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field in order to enter this program and must hold a solid GPA. Letters of reference and a full application must also be turned in, along with a thirty dollar application fee which is nonrefundable. This program is very competitive in terms of admissions.

MPH Tuition and Financial Aid

Students are charged by the credit hour for admissions here. Currently the tuition fee is around 405 dollars per credit hour for in state students and about 1,022 dollars per credit hour for out of state students.
