MPH Program Overview
The Master of Public Health program at the University of Illinoi at Urbana Champaign prepares students to help others to improve health conditions via their Health Behavior and Promotion concentration. While in the program, students will have the opportunity to work side by side with some of today’s top public health experts.
Through the collaborative efforts of multiple departments, students will experience the interdisciplinary nature of public health and learn obtain critical skills relevant to public health professions, including program/policy evaluation and analysis, and the creation of health promotion programs.
MPH students at UIUC will work with like-minded faculty and students while they prepare to improve community health and reduce disparities in health conditions across different communities.
MPH Curriculum and Courses
The UIUC MPH begins with a focus on six core areas of public health. This core coursework makes up 24 of the programs 48 credits. The six core content areas are:
- Public Health Practice
- Health Policy and Management
- Epidemiology
- Biostatistics
- Environmental Health
- Health Behavior and Promotion.
The Health and Behavior promotion concentration carries a requirement of 15-16 credit hours for all students.
An additional 3-4 hours of elective coursework must also be completed, as well as an off-site 200-hour practicum in a public health setting and a final capstone project that illustrates the knowledge and skills acquired through the program. MPH Admissions
The Illinois Champaign-Urbana MPH requires that applicants have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3.0 GPA calculated from the student’s most recent 60 hours of undergraduate coursework. Some of this coursework should reflect a background in public health or social sciences. Applicants must also submit GRE scores.
In addition to these requirements, a completed application must include a statement of purpose, a resume, recommendations, and official transcripts.
MPH Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for the UIUC MPH is currently $13,942 for Illinois residents. There are opportunities for teaching assistantships at UIUC, as well as other employment opportunities for tuition assistance, but tuition waivers are not available for this program.
Other financial aid opportunities may be explored through the school’s financial aid office. Students seeking assistance should fill out the FAFSA before every year.
