MPH Program Overview
The Master of Public Health program at the University of Missouri combines a complete knowledge of behavior change theory and program planning, with the evaluation of how public health policy decisions are both influenced and made at many different levels. This program can be particularly of note to students who did their undergraduate work in social work, journalism, psychology and political science.
The public health program at UM also offers unusual dual MPH degrees in veterinary medicine, journalism and public affairs. With these degrees, you will have excellent opportunities to train in the prevention of disease, strategic and risk communication and public policy creation.
MPH Curriculum and Courses
For the MPH in Health Promotion and Policy, you are required to take the classes listed below:
- Principles of Public Health
- Principles of Epidemiology
- Statistical Methods in the Health Sciences, or Biostatistics
- Research Methods in Public Health
- Human Health and the Environment
- Social and Behavioral Sciences in Public Health
- Public Affairs Processes and Strategies
- Health Care in the US
- Health Program Design and Management
- Evaluative Research in Social Work
The University of Missouri also offers dual MPH degrees in veterinary medicine, public affairs and journalism.
MPH Admissions
To apply to the MPH or dual MPH programs, you need to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school; a GPA of at least 3.0, an updated resume, two years of work experience in public health, two recommendations and a strong statement of purpose. You also will need to take the GRE in most cases.
MPH Tuition and Financial Aid
The University of Missouri MPH program offers a variety of fellowships and assistantships to help students pay for their graduate education. About ⅓ of the MPH students receive some sort of assistantship. The school also has a fellows program that has been established for returned Peace Corps volunteers.
The total cost of tuition is $336 per credit hour for in-state residents. For out-of-state residents, the cost is $860 per credit hour. The total cost for the degree is about $14,000 for in state residents, which makes it very affordable for most students.
